Thermostat and Heating Troubleshooting

Does your heater keep switching on and off? Has it been going all day but failing to heat your home? There are a few issues that you might want to look into with your heating that could be costing you a lot of money. Heaters are often the most expensive items in our homes, especially during the cold desert nights. When our heaters act up, our utility bills soar — and our comfort levels plummet.

Is It Your Heater or Your Thermostat?

Sometimes it can be difficult to determine whether your heater is acting up or it's just the thermostat; after all, the thermostat controls the heater! If you have a central air system, you can conduct a simple test; get a temperature reader and compare it to the temperature that your digital thermostat is reading. If it's off, you have a thermostat problem. If you don't have a digital readout, go to where your physical thermostat is (often a small metal or plastic box on your wall) and feel the temperature of the box itself. Is it being heated or cooled by anything? If a fan is blowing on your thermostat or a light is aimed at it, it's not going to get an accurate reading. Many a homeowner has accidentally damaged a thermostat by placing a reading light next to it!

The good news is that fixing a thermostat is usually a very easy process. We can order you the parts and have it repaired in no time at all. If you have a common unit, we may even be able to fix it right away.

Is Your Heater Turning Off and On Frequently?

Sometimes there can be problems with the sensors within your heater; this is especially true if you rely on a gas-powered heater or a furnace. Your heater may not be able to adequately detect whether it's actually operating correctly. Again, this is a simple fix. In fact, sometimes it just needs to be cleaned! Other times, we may need to replace the sensor. But when dealing with a gas-powered heater, it's advisable to consult with a professional; remember that for safety reasons, you should not deal directly with the gas lines.
