Three Ways to Prolong the Life of Your Water Heater

Water Heater

If you're like most people, you use your home's water heater every day. You rely on your water heater for everything from taking a hot shower to doing laundry and everything in between. And considering the high price tag on a new water heater, you'll want to do everything you can to extend the life of yours.

Flush the Tank Regularly

One of the best ways to prolong the life of your water heater is to have the tank itself flushed out regularly (one a year is ideal). This helps to remove sediments that can build up in the tank over time and reduce the efficiency of your water heater. Buildup of these sediments can also require your water heater to work harder, which results in premature wear and tear. Contact a professional plumber to flush out your water tank properly.

Install a Water Softener

If your home has a "hard" water supply, magnesium and minerals in your water could be building up in your water heater and damaging it. By investing in a water softener--a small appliance that connects to your home's plumbing system and removes magnesium/hard minerals from your water--you can put less wear and tear on your water heater, thus extending its life. Furthermore, "soft" water is also much better for the rest of your home's plumbing appliances, such as your dishwasher and clothes washer.

Add a Second Anode

Finally, if your water heater is like most, it was installed with just one anode connected to it. Anodes are the parts responsible for removing sediment from your water before it enters the tank and gets heated. Over time, anodes can become worn out and, if not replaced in a timely fashion, can cause damage to your water heater and tank. To avoid this, consider having a plumber install a second anode on your water heater to double its lifespan and save you a lot of hassle down the road.
